On October 2, the Graduate School of Education (GSE) hosted an information session about the new minor in education.

The session, held at the conference area near Bassily, was open to all members of the AUC community.

The minor in educational studies was approved by the GSE last year a offers number of courses, giving students an opportunity to study the practices of learning and teaching.

“I believe that many young people who come from particular subject areas would like to be able to teach as it’s a general country-wide concern,” said Malak Zaalouk, director of the Middle East Institute for Higher Education (MEIHE) and GSE faculty member .

“Everyone is really very concerned about educational system here and internationally.” .

Dean of GSE Ted Purinton stressed the importance of the minor and how it will expose students from various elds of study to a strong foundation in education,

especially upon noticing a large number of student clubs and extracurricular activities focusing on education.

However, he said there are no plans in the near future of expanding the minor into a bachelor’s degree.

“We don’t really have this point of intent to do a major in education. As a profession you want people to come after they nish their undergraduate degree and really choose deeply this as their lifelong at their professional life,” Purinton told The Caravan.

Zaalouk seemed to contest Purinton’s sentiment, saying that the future may hold more for enthusiasts of pedagogical studies.

“I think if we started with a minor and it’s successful enough and if there are enough people interested, one day we may develop to a major in education,” she said.

Although no students attended the event, some expressed interest to The Caravan in pursuing a minor in education.

“I’d love to minor in Education because I love kinds and I want to learn how to properly teach them,” freshman Habiba Ali said.
