Arts students have told The Caravan that they are pushing the university to allow a stationery commissary on campus that would meet their needs for various materials and supplies.

“When we work on our projects, we face the problem that we run out of tools and we don’t find any outlets on campus,” graphic design junior Farah Emam said.

Samir and Ali is the only stationery store located near campus in New Cairo, says graphic design junior Ahmed Khairy, but doesn’t provide all the supplies arts students need.

“Other outlets like Alwan are located in Nasr City and in Zamalek, so we waste time to get our tools – time that is need to work on our projects,” Khairy said.

Graphic design student senator Bassem El-Koury says he is trying to get approval to situate the stationery commisary in the Performance and Visual Arts (PVA) area.

“We will start a survey to see what students exactly need to be available in the outlet,” El- Koury said.

The outlet will include materials ranging from various kinds of paper (canson, coated, matte paper, glossy, colored) to other basic materials depending on the needs of the students.

El-Koury says he will work with the Student Union (SU) to ensure that students have the materials and supplies they require.

“In the future if we could have a stationary outlet like Samir and Ali or Alwan this will be helpful as well,” El-Koury said.

“I’ve talked with Bassem El- Koury and we were searching for what arts students need, and we are holding a lot of meetings to find proper solutions to what they need,” said Mai Borham, the SU’s Huss and PVA officer.
