AUC Student Union Starts Ramadan Campaign

Edited by: Karim Moataz

The Student Union (SU) announced the start of its Ramadan campaign on February 18 in preparation for the holy month, expected to begin on March 11.

The Ramadan Campaign is an annual initiative by the Student Service Responsibility (SSR) committee, which was launched five years ago. It aims to provide special Ramadan food packages for AUC workers, encouraging students to be more responsible and give back to the community.

The packages are set to have a kilo of rice, two bags of pasta, a kilo of sugar, a tea box, 500g of lentils, 400g of beans, one bottle of oil, two tomato paste bags, and 500g of dates.

“Our initial goal is to provide packs for 1,300 workers. So, for example, when we have enough donations for 500 packs, we’ll start forming the assembly line in the AUC plaza or gardens, and people will be able to join us to pack,” explained the Chair of Community Engagement and Architecture junior Baheya.

In honor of Ramadan, the SU started collaborating with other university clubs, such as Mashroo3 Kheir and Hand in Hand, in 2022, coming together to expand the initiative and prepare more food packages for the workers. Last year, they managed to prepare over 1,000 packages.

“In Ramadan, everyone gets together, so we decided to gather all the community service clubs together and collaborate. We all have one purpose, and it is to serve the community,” said Aly.

Aly explains that they will invite representatives from different non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to guide students on how to volunteer, how and where to start, and the proper strategies to have to succeed.

The SSR is set to host a stunt to raise awareness about their campaign, in the form of a “mini assembly line” with surprise activities.

Students can also contribute and donate to the campaign through several means, such as at the SU help desk, the SU market, or by directly messaging the SU Instagram account.
